The #21days challenge – now is the time for change

Is there something that you would like to change to improve your life in some way? If you’re like me then I am betting there are loads of things that you would change, if only you had the energy, willpower, time, resources, help and so on…

Personally, I would like to run everyday, write more blog posts, read and comment on more blog posts, read more books, regularly contribute to my learning log, spend more quality time with family and loved ones, do more fun stuff with my friends, eat more greens, make more money, and figure out exactly how I am going to make my millions (Ok, I might need some help with those last two!)

Now there may be a way

Fortunately, Robert Pickstone has an idea that just might help us start addressing some of these things we want to change in our lives. The following quote is taken from Robert’s blog post ‘Do you want change badly enough’

“If you have struggled to change something, Jack Russell (author of Don’t Tell The Bumble Bee) suggests that it takes 21 days to change a positive or negative habit, so you need carry out the required activity for 21 days solid to really give yourself a real chance of change in the long term.”

From the response to his blog post Robert came up with the idea of the “21 days challenge”, where from Monday 28th June to Sunday 18th July a group of people will collectively vow to implement one (or more for those who are confident) of the changes they would like to make. Read Robert’s follow up post ‘Would you like to take part in the 21 days challenge?’ for full information.

I love this idea because it allows people to make really positive changes in their lives whilst connecting with other people who are trying to do the same thing. They can share as much or as little information as they like and share support and guidance with each other by using the #21days hashtag on Twitter.

I will be taking part in this challenge and in the next couple of days I will share my 21 days mission on Robert’s blog and it would be great if you could do the same. At the time of writing 35 people have decided to take part and the more people that join in, the better it will be for all of us!

What to do next:

1) Read the background behind this idea on Robert’s blog post ‘Do you want change badly enough’

2) Read the information for the 21 days challenge

3) Decide on something that you would like to change over the 21 days

4) Comment on Robert’s blog to let everyone know you will be joining in

5) Tweet and follow the #21days hashtag to show your support

Here’s to a collectively positive 21 days!

I wish you the best of luck in your 21 day challenge Jed! I know you will accomplish anything you set your mind to.

I have found that most behaviors can indeed be changed in 21 days. I have also found that more deep rooted complex behaviors may take more than 21 days to change. The key to success comes in setting clear, specific goals, celebrating small wins and continuing to challenge yourself. A few reasons I do think the 21 day challenge works is because it is relevant, meaningful and top of mind. What you focus on typically generates results.

I can't wait to hear about your progress and I am thinking about what my 21 day challenge will be! Thanks for sharing!!

    Hi Kelly,

It's great that you seem to have some experience of changing behaviors in 21 days. Hopefully the challenge will have a real impact on those who are taking part.

Have you decided what your challenge is yet? Would be good to hear!

Thanks for your comments and encouragement Kelly and for sharing some great advice on how to maximise the chance of success in the 21 days!

I agree with what you are saying about deep rooted complex behaviours possibly taking longer to change, and I think a lot of it comes down to the wants/desires argument of how badly you want that change. I haven't read 'the bumble bee' yet but am very interested in reading Jack Russells take on it.

Thanks for getting involved in the challenge, I'm really looking forward to hearing what you are planning to do. I think the best thing about this challenge is the motivation that will come from everyone sharing such positive experiences. Bring on Monday!
