Social media stories

by Jed on April 3, 2011

Social media has changed my life – this might sound sensationalist but it’s true. OK, so I still have the same family and the same job, but as I said in my last post I have connected with a lot of wonderful people and learned many things that I wouldn’t have if I didn’t use social media. And I’m not the only one. There are a lot of people who feel the same as me, but for a variety of different reasons and many of these reasons being far more interesting than mine.

Last month, as part of Plymouth Twestival, we asked over twenty Twitter users in Plymouth what benefits they’ve experienced from using Twitter, and how it has impacted their lives. We then put all of their responses into an e-book so we could share their stories, and we are really pleased with the results. Stories are incredibly powerful, so we wanted to use them to show people who are not on Twitter what they are missing.

In this e-book there are stories of how Twitter has helped people start businesses, relocate to a new city, find news stories to broadcast, meet new people, aid personal development, find customers, and much more. For anyone we manage to persuade to hop onto Twitter, we have also added some useful tips for new users.

If you are into social media, or are considering using social media, this would be a really good read for you, and the best part is its completely free! Please feel free to share it with friends you are encouraging to use Twitter too.

Anyway, enough of me telling you about it, download the stories here to see how brilliant they are…

Once you’ve finished, I’d also love to hear your social media stories, so tell me below…How has social media changed your lives?

    Hi Jed,

I’ve rambled on about how social media has changed my life quite a lot recently, mostly in the e-book, on Carol Verity’s blog and to anyone that will listen!

    http://www.carolverity.com/2011/03/how-social-media-changes-lives.html

I have found the two main ways in that it has changed my life is to connect to people and to learn. Everything else has followed from this. So, old friends, new friends, old job, new job, new city, new passions – my life has changed in many different ways but I feel that the connecting and learning has enabled it all.

Thanks for posting and I hope many people read the Plymouth Twestival e-book.

    Thanks

    Rob

Great post man. This is huge.. so big that the majority of the world has no idea about it! I’ve met some awesome people interacting on Twitter as well, some that I’m sure I’ll meet in person some day soon. I think it’s fascinating to observe the way these tools are changing the way we communicate. It’s great! Good post.

Thanks for your comment Rob. Its no surprise that you have ‘rambled on’ about how social media has changed your life a lot recently, since it is providing you with your career direction. Don’t worry though, we all agree with you and love hearing you talking about it…so keep ‘rambling on’!

Thanks also for your contributions to the e-book, they have helped make it what it is!

    Cheers,
    Jed

Thanks for your comment Ryan. I’m glad you are enjoying social media as much as I am. If you’ve seen my post before this you’ll see that I’m a big advocate of taking online relationships offline, so I say go for it and meet some of those awesome people that you’ve been chatting with on Twitter. I find that you form relationships online because you have common ground with people, which always makes the offline meetings feel more natural!

Great to meet you online and I look forward to chatting more with you on Twitter.

    Cheers,
    Jed

Thanks, will download it later. I quite agree, social media has made quite an impact, and not just for connections but how information has exploded into hyper real time is pretty mind bogling.

Thanks for your comment, I hope you enjoy reading the e-book! I agree with you that it is mind boggling how fast information travels through social media – quite often I find out what is happening in other parts of the world through Twitter, before hearing through news channels of websites.

Jed! This is awesome man. I’m super psyched about social. It’s literally changing the world now, just like it was two years ago. I don’t think it will ever get old- just more ridiculously exciting.
I can totally relate to meeting new people and finding great business opportunities. There is so much we can do with this technology it’s sickening! (in a positive way)

Cool post man, like what you did.

Thanks for your comment Ryan, I’m glad you liked the post. Have you seen this video by neolabels yet? http://juusthings.tumblr.com/post/5664930377/digital-life-today-tomorrow-by-neolabels

If not, its a great video and I’d recommend watching it. Like you I find it really exciting how connected the world is becoming and this is only going to grow – and as the technology and connectedness increases, so will use of social media. Social media may evolve moving forwards, but I can’t see it ever going away now!

    Thanks again for the support.
